Chemists Find an Easier Way to Synthesize New Drug Candidates; New Method Could Have a Big Impact on Pharmaceutical Business - sciencedaily.com

Some drugs may be more effective the longer they last inside the body. To prevent such drugs from being broken down too rapidly, pharmaceutical manufacturers often attach a fluorine-containing structure called a trifluoromethyl group. However, the processes now used require harsh reaction conditions or only work in a small number of cases, limiting their usefulness for synthesizing new drug candidates for testing.

Now, MIT chemists have designed a new way to attach a trifluoromethyl group to certain compounds, which they believe could allow pharmaceutical companies to create and test new drugs much faster and potentially reduce the cost of drug discovery. The new synthesis, reported in the June 25 issue of Science, could have an immediate impact.

Dana Hallberg
Vice President, Western Region

Dana has been with Lab Support for fourteen of her nineteen years in life science and healthcare staffing. In her current role as Vice President of the Western Region, she leads a large team of “outstanding staffing consultants” (in her words), providing the leadership needed to drive revenue growth and develop business with new and existing clients. True to Lab Support’s “scientists recruiting scientists” staffing approach, Dana’s prior work experience includes five years as a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and two years as an analytical chemist in the petrochemical industry. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and psychology from The College of New Jersey, and is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Institute of Food Technology.

Aside from the ongoing impact she makes supporting her team in their day-to-day activities, Dana has made many significant contributions to Lab Support throughout the years. She had a key leadership role in the international expansion of Lab Support into Canadian and European markets, establishing Lab Support operating divisions in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and Switzerland. Additionally, Dana was a central player during the IPO (Initial Public Offering) process for Lab Support – the residing CEO and Board had her present to several underwriters as well as institutional and PE investors the “Lab Support story” and, since theirs was a niche new to staffing, relay how they were being received by clients and scientific candidates. Dana says, “We were in the right place, at the right time, with the right story." Subsequently, the Company was listed in Forbes magazine as one of the 200 fastest growing small companies – for ten years in a row. Dana sums it up: “We were a small company back then, with HUGE potential that we are still realizing.”

Dana enjoys working with her wonderful, talented team of professionals, and is proud of the Company and her colleagues, saying, “Since first joining the company, and upon returning, the On Assignment and Lab Support names have been synonymous with quality. We do it right, with integrity, honesty, and care. We know we have many clients to make happy – our paying customers, our employees and candidates, our internal staff, and our shareholders.”

Dana is as active in her personal life as she is in her professional life, spending time with her husband Frank of twenty-two years and their two Great Danes, Jack and Susie; cooking; hiking; traveling; and scuba diving, to name a few interests.
